The Walk4Hearing is a nationally coordinated effort to increase awareness about the
causes and consequences of hearing loss and to raise funds to provide information
and support for people with hearing loss.
Last year, while preparing for the Walk 4 Hearing event held by the Grand Rapids
Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLA-GR), one family embraced
the walk by making it a personal mission – collecting funds and walking in honor of
their grandfather. “We called our walk-team, ‘Team Krause,’” says HLA-GR Board
Member, Vic Krause. “Our team members ranged from the young grandchildren to
those of us on the other end of the age spectrum. We thought there might be an
issue with the young ones not being able to keep up. As it turned out, we were trying
to keep up with them!” joked Krause.

The HLA-GR Walk 4 Hearing not only promotes awareness and funds for hearing
loss, it also helps bring families and friends together – with a 5K walk (3.1 miles).
The walk is designed to be family-friendly. Held for
the second year on the Metro Health Hospital
campus in Wyoming, the event has easy access,
free parking, with the walk mapped out, taking
walkers throughout the grounds. Walk 4 Hearing Chairman, William Waring has been hard at work
making sure that this year’s walk maximizes fund
raising and awareness for the local chapter.
Waring, who has hearing loss and wears a hearing aid, has served on the HLA-GR
board for many years, and understands the importance of hearing loss education and
research. “I know firsthand how hearing loss affects communication and what we
can do about it,” says Waring. “Serving on the HLA board has helped me step up and
encourage others to learn more about hearing loss and the advancements that have
been made in hearing assistance technology – from better hearing aids to cochlear
implants and hearing loop systems.”
The local Walk 4 Hearing is one way everyone can help this cause that affects an
average 12% of the U.S. population. Whether you have hearing loss or know of
someone close to you who does, we hope that you will take a moment to consider
participating in the Walk 4 Hearing taking place Sunday, October 10 at Metro
Health Hospital in Wyoming, Michigan.
