| Boot Camp Training |
The Hearing Loss Awareness Day at the State Capitol (DASC) planning committee is seeking representatives from the Hard of Hearing, Deaf and Deaf/Blind communities to participate in a Boot Camp Training. This training is intended to prepare individuals from the grassroots organizations to go back to their chapters, clubs or boards and provide training in basic advocacy and the 2010 DASC issues.
Trainees will take this information back to their groups to prepare them for the Day at the State Capitol event on Wednesday, May 12. Trainees will be given a disc with PowerPoint and/or video materials and a Citizen's Guide to State Government. The Boot Camp Training will take place on Saturday, February 27 from 10 until 4 pm in Lansing.
For those of you who have not attended a DASC event before, it is an opportunity for people with hearing loss to advocate with legislators for issues related to communication access in our state. We begin with a welcome in the morning, followed by visits to the galleries of the Senate and House of Representatives. Time is provided for people to meet personally with their legislators to talk about the issues most important to them. Generally legislators stop by at lunch time to address the attendees. In the past we have tried to have a program during the lunch time but the number of legislators attending the luncheon doubles each year so we will make them primarily the noon program for this year's event. There is also a closing session that begins around 2 pm with adjournment around 2:45 pm.
Lunch will be provided at the Boot Camp Training. Interpreters, CART, an induction loop and FM systems (as needed) will be provided.
If you are interested in attending this important training, contact Ann Liming at aliming@hearingloss-mi.org.
